Breakfast is the most important meal of the day right? Well for me, it’s certainly one of my favorite.
It’s long been debated if you NEED to eat before your workout and truthfully, there are a few factors that go into that equation. The short answer is that it is different for everyone. For example, if you are working out first thing in the morning and know you will be able to consume a meal immediately after, then often times people will fast before their workout to optimize the fat burning process by eating after.
But if you aren’t working out until later or are planning a very long and strenuous workout, then eating something before is a good idea.
For me, I almost always eat breakfast before my workout since I’m usually waiting about 4-5 hours to workout after I wake up and I usually don’t have time to eat a meal afterwards. Plus, I just really enjoy eating breakfast with my family in the morning.
So what am I eating before I hit the gym? Here are my top three favorite breakfast meals that I usually rotate between my low, medium and high carb days.
#1 – Low Carb Breakfast
Two eggs cooked in grass fed butter, lots of spinach sautéd, and two chicken sausage links
This is my go-to, low carb breakfast. I eat this at least twice a week and it never fails me! It’s filled with delicious protein and keeps me full through my fat-burning workouts.
#2 – Medium Carb Breakfast
I absolutely LOVE protein pancakes! My recipe doesn’t actually include protein powder, but rather protein rich almond flour and eggs. It’s really simple and tastes delicious (1/2 cup almond flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2 of a mashed banana or 1/4 cup canned pumpkin, 1 egg, pinch of salt). I love to eat this with a little almond butter and a fried egg on top as the syrup. It is some kind of wonderful!
#3 – High Carb Breakfast
Oh how I love high carb days! Doesn’t everyone? Usually on a high carb day I’ll grab a good source of carbs like sprouted grain bread. Here I have a sprouted grain English Muffin with some avocado, sautéed spinach, and two eggs. Such a perfect way to start the day!
There you have it! Three wholesome and entirely delicious breakfasts that truly help to fuel my body and keep me at my best all day.
