Now that the move to Boston countdown is on, John and I are trying to savor every last meal in Chicago while we can. Don’t get me wrong, I know Boston has some fantastic food, particularly the seafood which I’m most excited for, but the one thing I will miss dearly about this city is the fact that you can go virtually anywhere and get a fantastic meal.
Unfortunately for us (but fortunately for our wallets), we don’t have much time to explore the late night or dinner scene, so our meal out of choice has been brunch. Almost every Sunday, we try to hit up a new place and indulge over the intricate menus that have blown us away.
This past Sunday was no exception as we ventured into North Side to enjoy Kingsbury Street Cafe. I have heard good things and immediately after seeing the menu online, I knew I would be pleased.
When you walk in, you are greeted by a tantalizing glass bakery case filled with the most decadent treats. Think rich pastries, buttery croissants, and chocolate covered bacon. Behind the case, you see a few hard working baristas busily creating cappuccinos and almond milk lattes. I always appreciate a place that has almond milk on hand!
We had a little wait, but nothing too out of the ordinary for a late Sunday morning. As soon as we got seated, I started assessing the menu as I knew I had to limit my ten different options. Eventually, I decided on my gut instinct, the Harvest Oatmeal – steel cut oats, roasted kabocha squash, candied walnuts, flaxseed, cinnamon and agave.
You had me at the roasted kabocha! This was delicious! A nice hearty portion but not an overabundance. The squash was lightly sweetened by the cinnamon and agave and the walnuts added a nice bite.
John’s meal just may have topped mine.
The salmon hash was comprised of sautéed peppers, shredded tater tots, and shredded salmon served with two beautifully poached eggs.
This could have possibly been better than mine. Next time, I may have to go against my inner oatmeal loving self and order off the grid with something like this.
What I love about Kingsbury Street Cafe is that everything is made on premise, even the bread! It all tastes so fresh with simple, healthy ingredients.
I’m so happy we had the chance to discover Kingsbury Street before we left. Luckily for us, we planned a going-away brunch here next week, so I’ll be making my way back one last time!
Aside from our normal brunch cravings, some other things I’ve been all about lately….
Plain Greek yogurt, blackberries, pecans and hemp seeds. This is simple but so satisfying. Plus, Whole Food’s plain Greek yogurt is pretty fantastic!
Fresh fruit! I’ve been awful dehydrated lately and it doesn’t help that the sub zero temps are deterring me from wanting to drink any cold water, so I’ve been quenching my thirst with lots of fruit. It’s tasting so good to me right now.
Speaking of things tasting good….
Bacon! Seriously, what is happening? I use to HATE bacon. I literally would want to vomit by the smell and now, I can’t get enough of it. Every guy I tell this to is ecstatic – me, I’m just going with it for now.
Talk to you soon!
